Deepinder Goyal Launches 'Crowd-Supported' Weather Infrastructure
In a new update, Goyal announced that Zomato has launched India¡¯s first crowd-supported weather infrastructure, which would provide real-time temperature, rain and other such updates.
Goyal stated that Weatherunion.com, boasting a proprietary network exceeding 650 on-site weather stations, stands as the most extensive private infrastructure of its category within the nation. Operating within 45 major cities presently, its reach is slated for further expansion in the near future.
¡°These weather stations, developed by Zomato, provide localised, real-time information on key weather parameters such as temperature, humidity, wind speed, rainfall etc.¡± he said in a post on the X platform.
Accessing the platform would be completely free of charge.
¡°We are now opening up free access to this (through an API) to all institutions and companies in the country. Wait. What? Free? Really? Yes, we believe that this data is too valuable to keep to ourselves or to monetise; therefore, as a Zomato Giveback, we are opening up access to this data to everyone for public good.¡±

Goyal highlighted that the real-time weather data holds potential for enhancing productivity and stimulating economic growth for companies and institutions. Zomato, in collaboration with CAS-IIT Delhi, has invested in developing infrastructure to access precise and up-to-date weather information, facilitating informed business decisions. Expectations are set on forging additional partnerships to leverage this platform effectively.
Additionally, Goyal, an alumnus of IIT-Delhi, mentioned the possibility of volunteers offering space on their premises for installing weather stations.
