Another Indian car make has achieved a perfect 5-star safety rating in a recent crash test by Global NCAP. This time, Mahindra XUV300 compact SUV is the one to boast of the achievement, as it becomes only the third Indian vehicle ever to do so.
Even more impressively, Mahindra XUV300 is now also the only Indian vehicle to have achieved a 4-star safety rating for child occupants in the rear seat. With this, the vehicle becomes the top safety rated made-in-India car ever, slightly beating the Tata Nexon and Tata Altroz in the points tally.?
The extra points awarded to the car can also be accredited to the best side-impact performance and lowest level of intrusion of the car. As a cumulative effect, the car was able to earn the best combined result under Global NCAP's #SaferCarsForIndia campaign, making it the safest among all the 5-star rated cars in the category. You can watch the crash test in the video below:
David Ward, CEO and President, Global NCAP, hails the win for safety, saying ¡° It¡¯s a vitally important win for Indian consumers and sets a safety challenge that every manufacturer must now be measured against.¡± The top safety rating has been a result of 2 frontal airbags as standard, and optional ESC and side impact airbags.?
Global NCAP deemed the structure of the car as well as its footwell area as stable. Head neck and chest protection for adult occupants was good, except for the driver chest protection which was found to be adequate. In addition, femur and knees protection was found to be good as well.?
As for the child occupants, the 18 month old dummy received good protection with the CRS installed rearward facing, standard ISOFIX anchorages and a support leg.?Meanwhile, protection for the 3 year old was deemed ¡°fair¡±, with the forward facing CRS using the ISOFIX anchorages and a top tether. The one point was lost due to the lack of three point belts in all seating positions, as well as the poor ISOFIX markings.?
As more and more Indian made cars move towards the top safety rating, it is clear that Indian OEMs are prioritising safety in their vehicles. This, and the upcoming safety norms for passengers on the roads will ultimately make the Indian roads a safer experience for all the stakeholders.
