Auto makers in India are racing to grab a piece of the increasing electric vehicle market in the country. The same holds true for Royal Enfield, one of the biggest entities in the two-wheeler segment, that now wants to go electric.
As part of its larger electric mobility plan, Royal Enfield has reportedly developed some prototypes of electric two-wheelers already. It is now in the process of figuring out an EV strategy for the country.
The confirmation of the push to electric comes from none other than the company CEO. Vinod Dasari, Chief Executive Officer, Royal Enfield, in an interaction with Moneycontrol, said, "Electric is something we have been thinking about for quite some time. We are trying to figure out exactly which segment is the right segment for us. Electric is something we take very seriously."?
Dasari did not really share too many specifications of the company¡¯s endeavour to bring in electric offerings in the country. He did, however, hint at the importance of the move, stressing that it is a ¡°serious¡± goal for the firm.
Dasari mentioned that it is no longer a question of 'if' there will be electric vehicles. Instead, Royal Enfield is focused on 'when' these electric vehicles will arrive.
To be prepared for the market whenever the EV revolution in India hits the pedal, Royal Enfield has already created prototypes for various two-wheeler segments.
While potent electric cars set the benchmark for the capability of electric vehicles, it is the two-wheeler market that is boosting the adoption of EVs in the country.
This is also the reason why even though the major players are still busy strategising their efforts towards electric two-wheelers, we have seen several new entries in the market in the form of startups that focus on offering an electric solution to the mobility needs in India.
Others are catching up too, with efforts towards launching EVs as soon as possible in the country. In the premium segment, Harley Davidson showcased its LiveWire electric bike in the country early last year. Just like RE, Honda is also in the process of bringing in an electric bike soon. Once out, these will join an ever growing list of electric bikes in the country.
