After the launch of India's cheapest hatchback Tata Tiago EV now Tata Motors is preparing to introduce another new model in the electric vehicle segment. It is reported that the company is going to launch the electric version of its famous and one of the most selling micro SUVs Tata Punch and it is expected to become the cheapest electric SUV.?
Four electric vehicles of Tata Tata Motors - Tigor EV, Tiago EV, Nexon EV Prime and Nexon EV Max are already available for sale in the market. Now Punch EV will be the fifth electric vehicle to be introduced by the company. Experts believe that after coming into the market, it can be the cheapest electric SUV in the country.
Tata Motors launched Tata Punch in the domestic market on 18 October 2021 and since then it became one of the favourites among the people. It is reported that the company rolled out its 1 lakh unit in August 2022. It has been the first SUV to reach this milestone in just 10 months.
According to various reports, the new Tata Punch EV will be based on the company's ALFA (Agile, Light & Flexible Architecture) platform to deliver maximum luggage space, rear legroom, and utility space around the driver, on which the company's premium hatchback car Altroz has also been built. It is expected that the company will use Ziptron technology on the lines of Tigor and Tiago in this SUV as well with higher power output. Ziptron will show the world that Electric Vehicles are breathtakingly swift, incredibly silent, extremely pocket-friendly, and hassle-free to run. It is also expected that Tata Punch EV will be available with two different battery pack options, one with a medium range and the other with a higher range battery pack.
As far as the design is concerned, it is possible that no major changes will be seen in the new Tata Punch EV. Its exterior will be largely similar to the current ICE model, though as an electric car, it will definitely see some cosmetic changes. It will be positioned between the Nexon EV and the Tiago EV in the company's electric vehicle (EV) portfolio and may come with some additional features over the petrol model.
The Punch EV is likely to use a similar powertrain set-up as Tata¡¯s existing EVs, with a permanent magnet synchronous motor powering the front wheels. Although the company has not yet shared any information about the battery pack etc. of this electric car, according to various reports the company can provide a battery pack of 24kWh capacity in it. In this context, this car will give a driving range of around 250 to 300 km. Along with this, the option of fast charging is also expected to be given.
Tata Motors is trying its best to keep the price of its electric vehicles affordable as well. The starting price of the recently launched Tata Tiago Electric is Rs. 8.50 Lakh (Ex-showroom) and so it is expected that the new Punch Electric SUV can be launched at a price between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 14 lakh. Tata could launch the Punch EVat the Auto Expo 2023 to be held in January.
As part of its multipowertrain strategy, Tata is maximizing the volume of its existing products. Models like the Tiago and Tigor are available with three fuel options ¨C petrol, CNG and electric ¨C and following the Punch EV, a CNG version may also come soon.
The Curvv and Avinya electric car concepts were showcased by Tata Motors earlier this year and will be on display at the Auto Expo 2023 as well. The former is based on Nexon EV's Gen 2 platform, while the latter is based on EV skateboard architecture. With these two platforms and Sigma, Tata Motors will be able to cover all its bases in the EV market until 2030.
