No film in a long time has made so much noise as Sandeep Reddy Vanga¡¯s Kabir Singh. It kick-started a national debate because some people felt the movie was romanticising misogyny, while others argued that it¡¯s just a film which doesn¡¯t necessarily depict reality.
While director Sandeep Reddy Vanga gave interviews and expressed his opinions on the entire hoopla, which eventually ignited the controversy, Shahid Kapoor who played the lead role in the movie kept mum all this while.
Now that things have calmed down after a month, Shahid Kapoor feels it¡¯s the right time to talk about it. In an interview to Bollywood Hungama, he said that he kept mum because the environment wasn¡¯t healthy. So, he didn¡¯t want to attack anyone or defend the film at that time.
About his much-criticised character of Kabir Singh in the movie, Shahid Kapoor said that he didn¡¯t think there was any problem apart from anger management.
In an interview to Film Companion, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga had said that Kabir slapping Preeti in the movie depicted their love. "When you are deeply in love and deeply connected to a woman (and vice versa), if you don't have the liberty of slapping each other, then I don't see anything there."
This comment led to a lot of backlash. Fans slammed the director for saying that it¡¯s not true love if you can¡¯t slap each other. A lot of people including Kubbra Sait mocked him. When Shahid was asked about the same, here¡¯s what he said.
¡°¡®So, if Kabir hadn¡¯t slapped Preeti, would it be okay for everything else that he did?¡¯ Because he slapped the girl you feel that is unacceptable and therefore Kabir is an unacceptable character. We want you to feel that this is unacceptable and his behavior has gone beyond control. That is why the entire second half of the film is about his fall. He is peeing in his pants in the interval of the film.¡±
In another interview with Hindustan Times, Shahid Kapoor said that it¡¯s healthy that people disagree in the society. ¡°The fact that people reacted so strongly to Sandeep¡¯s statement is actually a testimony that the product, the film, was so potent. That people actually started to feel Kabir and Preeti (played by Kiara Advani) are a real couple who behave like this with each other. It¡¯s a big compliment. I¡¯m totally okay that people have issues with Kabir. I have issues with Kabir. I would never want to behave like he did. But then I am the actor who has to play the part¡±.
Shahid Kapoor also said that the criticism was misplaced. He, furthermore, asked why no one picked on Sanju, the movie which had crossed Rs 300 crores. ¡°To be candid, Sanju had a scene where the guy is sitting in front of his wife and saying he has slept with over 300 women. No one picked on it the way they went after Kabir Singh,¡± he said.
