The makers of?The Tinder Swindler have released another spine-chilling documentary on Netflix,?American Nightmare, which?examines the tragic case of Denise Huskins, who was kidnapped, drugged, raped and held hostage by a violent home intruder in 2015. At first, her husband Aaron Quinn was considered the prime suspect, but when she returned unscathed, the Police had many reasons to believe she faked her own kidnapping. She was labelled as real-life Gone Girl by the media.?
However, this narrative was far from the truth. After another similar invasion happened where the kidnapper mistakenly left his phone, the Police tracked?Matthew Muller's home in Dublin, which gave them more evidence of many of his crimes including Denise Huskins' kidnapping.
Muller pleaded guilty to Huskins kidnapping in September 2015. Two years later in 2017, he was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
A former Marine, Muller reportedly suffered from bipolar disorder. He was described as a Harvard-educated lawyer who was later disbarred. According to The Associated Press, "Muller calmly told U.S. District Judge Troy Nunley that he was taking antidepressant, mood-stabilizing and anti-psychotic drugs. His attorney, Thomas Johnson, later said Muller has been diagnosed as manic and depressive."??
"It's pretty simple. I¡¯m not guilty... I don¡¯t think there¡¯s any excuse for the way the Vallejo Police Department handled it. That's why I thought it was worth it to take a dive and made sure they achieved justice for that wrongful accusation," he said. Additionally, he said that he fell into "severe depression" in Sacramento jail. "I didn¡¯t care what happened to me," he said.?
During the hearing, US District Judge Troy L Nunley said, "The sentence imposed today reflects the egregiousness of Muller¡¯s conduct in this case. Muller had advantages in life that most people only dream of, yet he used his considerable intelligence to plan and execute the physical assault and psychological torture of two innocent strangers. It is difficult to imagine the level of suffering that Muller inflicted on his victims. The sentence handed down today takes into account that suffering and strives to ensure that Muller will never again commit such crimes."
Muller's defense attorney argued for a 30 year sentence as he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Following this, Muller was sentenced to 31 years in prison after he pleaded no contest to two counts of forcible rape and guilty to three other charges in 2022.
In 2018, he gave an interview to NBC Bay Area in which he said he was non-guilty. He said he accepted the crime as he felt bad for the couple.
American Nightmare is streaming on Netflix.
