Ever since director Atlee announced that his smashing hit Jawan will be released with an extended cut on OTT, fans had been pumped.?
After months of waiting, when it finally did, the result was a tad bit disappointing.
In many of his interviews, Atlee had said that many good scenes in the film were removed due to runtime issues. Therefore new scenes will be added to the OTT version. An estimate of additional 15-20 minutes were expected which would have made the run time over 3 hours long.?
The final copy of Jawan before it went to the censor board was said to be around 190 minutes. Post which it was reduced to 165 minutes for theatres. The digital audiences were expecting to catch the entire 190 minutes but the OTT version has been released with just 170 minutes of run time, which brings the difference to a mere 5 minutes.?
Previously, the female lead Nayanthara had revealed that many of her scenes were edited out and it was confirmed by Shah Rukh Khan which is why OTT seemed to be the best place to make those scenes available for viewing.
As per viewers, the difference between the two versions is so subtle that it mostly goes unnoticed. Going by the definition of ¡®extended cut¡¯ or ¡®director¡¯s cut¡¯, substantial changes are implied but in this scenario, it is coming across as a PR gimmick to lure people into watching the film on OTT for increased viewership.?
Jawan isn¡¯t the only movie to have taken this route. Even films like Pathaan and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani disappointed the digital audience as it only had a few extra seconds/minutes of unseen content.?
Jawan has earned over Rs 1000 crores worldwide from its theatrical release.?
SRK, Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi and Sanya Malhotra-starrer can be streamed on Netflix.
