Kareena Kapoor took her fans by surprise when she opted for an out-of-the-box role for her OTT film debut. After months of anticipation when Sujoy Ghosh¡¯s Jaane Jaan finally released on Netflix, it felt like a star was born, again!
She was the epitome of calmness in a storm as her character Maya D¡¯souza was battling a severe crisis. Despite Jaideep Ahlawat stealing the show in this crime/mystery/thriller, Kareena proved a point that she has a lot left to showcase, in terms of acting and much of it is yet to be revealed.?
She¡¯s never been completely away from the spotlight but with Jaane Jaan, it feels like she is in the second innings of her acting career which has more depth and complexity.?
Even as a personality, her recent interviews have been a breath of fresh air as her fans are getting to see a more mature and evolved side of her. Working alongside streaming era stars like Jaideep and Vijay Varma has probably left quite an impact on her. Kareena has said so herself!
Whatever may be the case, it¡¯s a refreshing change to see her cast magic with a sublime character like Maya. A character devoid of quintessential bollywood traits of singing, dancing and unrealistically dolled up, she played a regular woman and a mother going to extreme lengths for her daughter.?
Off screen is no different. Her interviews are a delight to watch as we get to see her serious side and her take on cinema and changing trends.?Let¡¯s check out some of her recent ones, which made us want to clap for her and then some.
After Kareena joined forces with phenomenal streaming actors like Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Varma, she was asked about her experience of working with this different league of artists. She wasted no time in stating the truth at a roundtable interview of Netflix.
She said, ¡°I feel Vijay and my chemistry, the fact that we have never worked together and the fact that we have come from different worlds, by that I don¡¯t mean our performances, just the circumstances of our lives are different. We never crossed paths. So somehow that also helped in the performance. They are from NSD and I am from the K3G school of acting.¡±
Kareena called her OTT debut a ¡®nerve-racking' experience. In the same roundtable interview, she told Rajeev Masand that it felt like she was appearing on the screen for the very first time.?
¡°Coming on to the OTT platform, that was a little nerve-racking. I think it did change the way I was performing. It was as though I was coming onto the screen for the first time. It was like what I felt 24 years ago.¡±
She also went on to cite the difference between working for OTT platforms and feature films. Kareena said, ¡°I was nervous because somehow, I feel that TV is more personal. Somebody could be watching you lying down in bed, in a comfortable space. You¡¯re really up-close and personal rather than sitting in the cinema, munching popcorn and the screen is there. So, somehow, I feel like that altered my thought a little bit¡±.
During The Film Companion Actors' Adda 2023, the actress shared how during a particular scene of Jaane Jaan, the camera came very close to her face and constantly moved around her.
For someone who had been very particular about looking a certain way, Jaane Jaan showcased her sans heavy makeup. She was asked if breaking free from the vanity of looking dolled up worried her. She responded, ¡°I want to be an actor first. This has been the case right from my first movie. I am confident about the way I look. I don¡¯t care if my lines are showing because that is just the way I am. I am an actor. Can you look beyond that? That¡¯s always been a challenge for me. I wanted them to look beyond that.¡±?
She also remarked that right from her first film Refugee, she always wanted to prove herself as an actor first, ¡°The star part of it was extremely incidental, and I have done films for that. But now it¡¯s not about that.¡±
In an interview with Forbes India, Kareena made a legit point that just like no one shames senior actors, the same courtesy should be extended to the ladies as well.
Kareena said in the interview, ¡°They are the most talented actors we've had in the Indian film industry. Rani is absolutely cinematic in every which way. Whatever role she plays, she just transforms on the screen. You cannot take your eyes off her. Tabu, for that matter, is one of the finest actors again the Indian industry has ever seen. For them, no one's thinking of age. They're entertaining the audience. We're here to entertain. How does age matter?¡±
She further added, ¡°All these actors are doing better than even, sorry, but even the younger lot. We're all raring to go. Age is just a number now and it shouldn't even be discussed. You're all not asking the old crop of actors how old they are, so how are we being asked.¡±
Ever since Jaane Jaan, she is often asked about whether the two mediums - silver screen and OTT are different from each other. Kareena has an interesting take on it. In the same interview with Forbes, she went on to say that streaming has changed the outlook of audiences and now actors are judge more for their craft than star power. She explained, ¡°Today it¡¯s not an industry only of stars. The artiste is being recognised far more than the star. First you have to be on top of the game as an artiste and then you follow on as a star¡±.
Kareena will next be seen in The Buckingham Murders, a murder mystery. She will portray the role of a grief-stricken mother Jass who has lost her 10-year-old son who was found murdered in Buckinghamshire. A detective herself, Jass takes it upon herself to find out the murderer and the motive behind it, only to uncover a lot of secrets. Soon, everyone in Buckingham becomes a suspect on her list.
Whether the film will release only on OTT or get a theatrical release as well remains unknown yet.
The streaming partner for The Buckingham Murders is Netflix.??
