Mufasa: The Lion King OTT Release Date - The seventh-highest-grossing film of 2024 is finally ready for a digital premiere but surely with a catch. For the facts, the American musical is still in theatres since its big screen release on December 20, 2024, and has grossed over Rs 4725 crore worldwide. While there's nothing better than watching it in theatres, OTT consumers are in for a ride this February. Here are five things you must know before streaming this musical.
Mufasa: The Lion King will be available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar on video-on-demand (VOD) starting February 18. Fans can stream it for free starting April 1. For those who prefer physical copies, the musical will be available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD starting April 1 giving users multiple ways to enjoy the never-seen-before saga at home.
Simba, now king, and Nala have a daughter, Kiara, and are expecting another cub. While they go to an oasis for Nala to give birth, Timon and Pumbaa are asked to watch over Kiara. Rafiki tells the story of Simba's grandfather, Mufasa, and his brother Scar. Mufasa was born in a drought to a small pride and was swept away by a flood. He meets a lion cub named Taka, who later becomes his brother.
They grow up together, but Taka becomes jealous of Mufasa. Taka secretly helps the Outsiders, a group of lions seeking revenge on Mufasa. Taka eventually betrays Mufasa and becomes Scar, driven by anger and jealousy. After a series of battles and an earthquake, Scar gets a scar, and Mufasa defeats the Outsiders. Mufasa becomes king, and Scar is left behind, filled with resentment. The story ends with Kiara on Pride Rock, about to share the tale with her new sibling.
Produced by Walt Disney Pictures, the film is photorealistically animated and serves as both a prequel and sequel to The Lion King (2019), the remake of the 1994 animated film of the same name. Mufasa: The Lion King is dedicated to James Earl Jones, who voiced Mufasa in both the 1994 original and the remake. His voice is heard briefly in the opening titles, as he died before the film's release.
The Times of India rated 3.5 out of 5 and a part of their review read, ¡°The film's photorealistic CGI is nothing short of breathtaking. Visually, Mufasa: The Lion King is a masterpiece. Despite its ambition, the script doesn't achieve the narrative strength of the original, often feeling contrived. Directed by Barry Jenkins from a screenplay written by Jeff Nathanson, Mufasa: The Lion King features Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Donald Glover, Beyonc¨¦ Knowles-Carter, and John Kani reprising their roles with new members like Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Tiffany Boone, Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, Lennie James and Anika Noni Rose joining the cast.
