The American drama is photorealistically animated and is both a prequel and sequel to the 2019 remake of the 1994 film The Lion King. Set in the Pride Lands of Tanzania after the events of The Lion King (2019), Rafiki, the wise mandrill, shares a story from the past with Kiara, Simba and Nala¡¯s daughter and Mufasa¡¯s granddaughter. He tells how Mufasa, an orphaned lion, was taken in by a royal family and became close friends¡ªlike a brother¡ªwith young Prince Taka. As Rafiki narrates the tale of their bond and challenges, Timon and Pumbaa jump in with their humorous takes, adding some fun to the heartfelt story.
Produced by Walt Disney Pictures, the film¡¯s screenplay has been written by Jeff Nathanson. Mufasa is dedicated to the memory of James Earl Jones, the original voice of Mufasa who passed away on September 9, 2024. While Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, John Kani, and Beyonc¨¦ Knowles-Carter reprise their roles, Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Tiffany Boone, Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, Lennie James and Anika Noni Rose join the cast.
Blue Ivy Carter will make her feature film debut with Mufasa: The Lion King. It also stars Braelyn Rankins, Theo Somolu, Kagiso Lediga, Blue Ivy Carter, Preston Nyman, Keith David, Folake Olowofoyeku, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim, Abdul Salis, Derrick L. McMillon, Maestro Harrell, A.J. Beckles, David S. Lee and Dominique Jennings among others.
James Laxton has cinematographed Mufasa: The Lion King, Joi McMillon edited it and Dave Metzger crafted music for this saga arriving in theatres on December 20.
