Ever noticed how the show? You, despite revolving around the dangerously obsessive Joe Goldberg, rarely shows him in explicit sex scenes? That wasn't just a creative choice. It was actor?Penn Badgley himself who asked for "no sex"?in the show. But all that changed in the final season. Why? Because when you're closing the chapter on a twisted character like Joe, the send-off needs to be as layered, and provocative, as his story.
You Season 5 is currently streaming on Netflix.
In the early seasons of You, Joe Goldberg found himself in plenty of intense and intimate moments.?
But by 2023, Penn Badgley shared that he had asked showrunner Sera Gamble to scale back on those scenes.?
One big reason? He didn't want to be boxed into the "romantic lead" stereotype. He also mentioned that staying true to his real-life marriage played a role in his decision.
However, for the show's fifth and final season, Badgley had to rethink that choice.?
Speaking about the shift to Deadline, he said there were fresh conversations with the creators about what made sense for the story.?
"What am I willing to do? And as I always said, I said, my desire is that least as possible, but if it's necessary, that's the show we all sign up to make," says Badgley.
Ultimately, he agreed to bring intimacy back but only where it felt meaningful and earned. While speaking to People, he discussed the decisions he made alongside the creative team: "So, let's make sure it's vital, let's make sure it's important, it's deliberate. And we did."
As he put it, they needed to "return to form" for Joe's conclusion, showing him once again as the dangerously charming figure who uses romance as his weapon.
