Boccaccio was the illegitimate son of a wealthy Italian merchant and an unknown woman who was born in 1313. The poet grew up in Florence, studied canon law, and practiced banking. Later, Boccaccio shifted his focus to writing. Boccaccio wrote about his observations.
The epidemic, as discussed in his book The Dacameron, arrived on the Italian Peninsula in 1347. It travelled across the peninsula and hit Florence in 1348. Scholars disagree on whether Boccaccio was in the city at the time, but he observed the aftermath of the sickness that killed his father and stepmother, as well as thousands others.
