Graham Hancock is returning with the second season of his controversial docu-series Ancient Apocalypse. First aired in 2022, this Netflix show explores various pseudoarchaeological theories about the existence of an advanced civilization during the Ice Age. Ancient Apocalypse: the Americas will be streaming on Netflix from October 16, 2024.
If you are wondering why this show is controversial, then soon after its first season was accused by the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) of promoting pseudoscientific theories and diminishing the entire credibility of archaeology. They even?sent a letter to Netflix and suggested that the series be reclassified as science fiction.
The first season featured Hancock visiting various prehistoric archaeological sites to look for evidence of such a civilization. The series alleged that these sites and the evidence got lost due to a meteor bombardment around 11,900 years ago. Season 2 is a continuation of the same journey and will feature a range of ancient sites in the Americas including countries like New Mexico, Peru, and Brazil.
For the unversed, Ancient Apocalypse 2 production was also briefly hindered due to opposition from various indigenous groups.
Graham Hancock is being joined by actor Keanu Reeves on his adventures across continents. Similar to the first season, several experts will be joining the show to double down on the claims made through the documentary. This includes Dr Chris Davis, an American archaeologist, Dr Alceu Ranzi, a Brazilian paleontologist and Dr. Sonia Cardinali, an archaeo-botanist from Easter Island (Rapa Nui).
Produced by ITN Productions, Ancient Apocalypse 2 is directed by Marc Tiley.
