In a revelation as eerie as Joe Goldberg himself, You showrunners Michael Foley and Justin Lo have shared that the series nearly ended with a supernatural twist, one where Joe discovers he¡¯s been dead all along.
(Spoiler alert! If you haven¡¯t finished You, look away now.)
Across five seasons, Joe Goldberg saw himself as a hopeless romantic but left a trail of bodies behind as he stalked, manipulated, and killed anyone who got in his way.?
In the final season, Joe returns to New York, where the truth finally catches up to him. He¡¯s exposed, arrested, and lands in prison.
Speaking to The Post, showrunner and executive producer Michael Foley revealed that the team didn¡¯t lock in Joe¡¯s ending until late in the writing process.?
¡°Throughout the series, there was a shared belief among the writers and the creators that Joe wouldn¡¯t get away with his crimes.¡±
He added, ¡°We came into the season knowing that we didn¡¯t want to redeem him, that he would get his comeuppance, that he was going to face some of those whose lives he ruined. And most importantly, we knew he was going to be made to face himself.¡±?
While the team considered different ways to end Joe¡¯s story, including his death, they decided prison was the harsher fate. ¡°We liked putting him in a veritable cage [in prison],¡± Foley said. ¡°We liked him not knowing the touch of a lover.¡±
Co-showrunner Justin W. Lo added that they also played with darker twists, including a version where Bronte kills Joe, and he doesn¡¯t realise he¡¯s dead until the final episode.?
¡°He realizes he¡¯s a ghost,¡± Lo said of the scrapped supernatural ending.
In the fifth and final season of You, Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) returns to New York City with his wife, Kate (Charlotte Ritchie), aiming to leave his violent past behind.?
However, his attempts at redemption are challenged when he becomes entangled with Bronte (Madeline Brewer), a woman seeking justice for his previous crimes.?
As tensions escalate, Joe's?dark history resurfaces, leading to his exposure and imprisonment for multiple murders.?
The series concludes with Joe reflecting on his actions, leaving viewers to ponder the complexities of his character.
