At a time when Karan Johar was making family-oriented films, Sunny Deol was showcasing the power of his vocals and dhai kilo ka haath and historical epic films like Lagaan were being spun, Abbas-Mustan gave us a dark thriller, perhaps the coolest suspense of all time that gained cult status because of memes.
When this film had released, memes were not even conceptualised. The film remains to be the coolest thriller ever!?
The film is all fun and games until one day when Lord Bobby Deol (Raj), as his fans call him, wakes up in Akshay Kumar's (Vicky) house to find that his wife has been murdered. Who killed her? The blame is on Bobby (Raj).
The film was a roller coaster ride full of thrill, suspense and lots of fun.
Bipasha Basu's dance in this song is hilarious, and the irony is - she is trying to seduce Bobby with her moves. For the unversed, Saroj Khan was the choreographer for the film. The music was composed by Anu Malik.
Akshay (Vicky) forces Bobby Deol (Raj) to drink and then tries to swap wives like they were commodities. "Kahin aisa toh nahi ki humein galat biwiyaan mil gayi hain?" - the dialogues of the film were problematic. Some people might still fear going out on double dates because of this.?
Also, the password scene remains to be the talking point even after years. To prove himself innocent, Bobby Deol (Raj) tries to hack into Akshay Kumar's (Vicky) bank account but he doesn't know the password. He thinks that the password could be the phrase that Akshay (Vicky) keeps repeating, and he is right. That phrase is still relevant in pop culture twenty years later. EVERYTHING IS PLANNED.
Remember this dialogue - "Main ittefaq se koi kaam nahi karta" - which is also the name of the book in which Raj finds Sonia Bajaj's boarding pass?
The dialogues of the film were gold!?
"Weekend pe kuch masti karein?"
"Let's go to hell!"?
"Yay!!!"?
This was also the debut film of Bipasha Basu, the diva who enthralled the audiences with her dance moves.?
Kareena, meanwhile, had third-world problems.
"8 din se Thai food, Chinese food, Lebanese food.. Koi bhi continental khana nahi khaaya... Roz ghar par daal-roti bana rahi hoon."
The climax of the film has one of the epic death scenes. After a lot of hurdles, Bobby Deol (Raj) who is mad at Akshay Kumar (Vicky) for blaming Bipasha Basu's (Sonia) murder on him, successfully kills him. It is one of the most iconic death scenes in Bollywood.
If you watch Ajnabee today, we assure you a great hilarious and cinematic experience.
