Kalki 2898 AD: The sci-fi epic Kalki 2898 AD, featuring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, and Kamal Haasan, has stormed the box office on its first day. According to early estimates from Sacnilk.com, the film has grossed over Rs. 180 crore worldwide, marking it as the third highest opener in Indian cinema history.
Directed by Nag Ashwin, Kalki 2898 AD earned approximately Rs. 95 crore net in India across all languages on its opening day, with a gross collection estimated at Rs. 115 crore. This massive debut surpasses the global opening records set by previous blockbusters like KGF 2, Salaar, Leo, Sahoo, and Jawan.
Released worldwide on June 27, the film garnered positive reviews and had already sold more than 20 lakh tickets through advance bookings.
The film's strong performance on day one included an impressive 85.15% occupancy rate in Telugu cinemas, with morning shows recording 86.36% attendance and night shows reaching 90.35%. With its spectacular start, Kalki 2898 AD sets a new benchmark in Indian cinema's opening day collections.
Kalki 2898 AD is set in a post-apocalyptic world in the year 2898 AD. The film follows a group of people on a mission to save the unborn child, Kalki, of SUM-80, a lab subject. This child is believed to be a modern incarnation of Lord Vishnu, destined to save the world from evil.
Storyline: In 3102 BC, after the Kurukshetra War, Ashwathamma is cursed to wander the earth as an immortal. His salvation lies in helping Vishnu's last avatar, Kalki, in the Kali Yuga. Fast forward to 2898 AD, and the city of Kasi is the last known city in a world devastated by a totalitarian god-king, Supreme Yaskin. The story revolves around a mission to protect SUM-80, who is pregnant with Kalki, from Yaskin's forces.
Production: The film was first announced in February 2020 under the working title Prabhas 21, which was?later changed to Project K as the main cast joined. Filming started in July 2021, was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and was wrapped up by March 2024. The official title, Kalki 2898 AD, was revealed in July 2023. The film has a massive budget of ?600 crore (US$72 million), making it the most expensive Indian film to date.
Release: Originally set for May 9, 2024, the release was postponed to June 27, 2024, due to unfinished production work. It was released worldwide in IMAX, 3D, and other formats.
