In exciting news, two Indian films have been selected to screen at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
One of them, "All We Imagine As Light" by Payal Kapadia, holds a significant place in Indian cinema history as the first Indian film in 30 years to compete for the prestigious Palme d'Or at Cannes.
In addition to Kapadia's film, another Indian gem, "Santosh," by British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri, will also take centre stage at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. It will be showcased as part of the Un Certain Regard section.
The journey of Indian cinema at Cannes traces back to 1946, when it made its debut.
Chetan Anand's "Neecha Nagar" became a trailblazer by not only earning a nomination for the Palme d'Or but also winning the coveted award.
Released on September 29, 1946, the film featured Uma Anand, Kamini Kaushal, Rafiq Anwar, and Zohra Sehgal and told the story of a wealthy sarkar facing protests from poor villagers against his nefarious plans. "Neecha Nagar" remains the sole Indian film to have won the Palme d'Or to this day.
Although "Neecha Nagar" holds the distinction of winning the Palme d'Or, several other Indian films have gained recognition at Cannes.
Bimal Roy's "Do Bigha Zamin" made history by securing the International Prize, marking the beginning of a series of accolades for Indian cinema at Cannes.
The Cannes Festival is scheduled to begin on May 14 and conclude on May 25, promising a celebration of cinematic excellence from around the world.
