A legally binding deal to combine Reliance Industries Limited and Walt Disney Company's media companies in India has been struck. This paves the way for the creation of an entertainment and media behemoth valued at $8.5 billion (about Rs 70,352 crore), exceeding all other companies in the sector.
The companies released a joint statement announcing that Uday Shankar will serve as vice chairperson and that Nita Ambani, the billionaire Mukesh Ambani's wife, will chair the combined entity.
After the merger is completed, RIL will have the majority of the JV's shareholding, with Viacom18 owning 46.82 percent and Disney holding 36.84 percent.
This suggests that Reliance and its affiliates will own a combined share in the business of more than 60% (majority).
