¡°The more I see remixes, the more it is distorted. The intention of the composer gets distorted.¡± - AR Rahman once said.
Well, the sun is setting south this time for the ace composer as he has arrived with a recreation of the iconic Bengali protest song Karar Oi Louho Kopat. The song features in Raja Krishna Menon¡¯s directorial Pippa which recently arrived on Amazon Prime Video.
Even after decades of its release, Karar Oi Louho Kopat stands tall as one of the strongest protest songs from Bengal and the Bengali community has seen the song as a hope of change and an emotional turmoil for years. Well, now the recreation by AR Rahman has just rubbed people the wrong way.
One user wrote, ¡°Everyone's got their limitations and it's really hard to work beyond them. Mr. Rahman is no exception.¡± The second one said, ¡°Rahman Sir, you can't play with our emotions by destroying the very soul of such an immortal creation.¡± ¡°Rahman Saab, It is not expected from you. You change the original score - the soul of this masterpiece,¡± added a third.
¡°A powerful song based on strong revolutionary messages to the younger generations got randomly transformed into a light-hearted romantic type melody. The lyrics seemed to be haphazardly scattered into some random pop chord progression. There is not even a central structure of the melody. Why AR Rahman? Why butcher such a wonderful phenomenal song? Why deform works of the great Kazi Nazrul Islam?¡±
In an interview with India Today in 2022, Rahman was asked about his thoughts on other composers remixing his tunes. To this, he had said, "The more I see, the more it is distorted. The intention of the composer gets distorted. People say, ¡®I am reimagining.¡¯ Who are you to re-imagine? I am also very careful of taking someone else¡¯s work.¡±
¡°You have to be respectful and I think it is a grey area, we need to sort it out.¡±
Talking about Pippa, the movie revolves around the Battle of Garibpur fought between India and Pakistan in November 1971. It stars Ishaan Khatter in the lead alongside Priyanshu Painyuli, Soni Razdan, Mrunal Thakur, and Inaamulhaq.
