The death of Queen Elizabeth II has shaken the entire world, especially the United Kingdom. The Queen who reigned for 70 years and was the longest-serving monarch in British history passed away at the age of 96.
In a statement, Buckingham Palace announced, "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon".
Her first visit was in the year 1961 - about 15 years after India's independence. She visited along with Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, her husband. President Dr Rajendra Prasad and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had welcomed them at the airport. She inaugurated All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and also visited Taj Mahal in Agra.
Her second visit was in 1983 along with Prince Phillip. She attended the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting and also met Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
During her third visit in 1997, she paid respect to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, visited?Jallianwala Bagh Memorial in Amritsar and called it a "distressing example".
The Queen had visited MGR film city upon invitation where a battle scene from the movie based on the life of Marudhanayagam, who contributed to India's freedom struggle was screened for her. She reportedly spent 20 minutes on the sets.? ?
On Twitter, he paid tribute to the queen and wrote, "Twenty-five years ago, she accepted our invitation and attended the inaugural of Marudhanayagam and greeted us. Most probably that is the only film shoot she had attended."
He also fondly recalled his meeting with her at Buckingham Palace five years ago when he had visited London for a cultural show and shared a picture of their meeting.??
For the unversed, the Queen had been suffering from age-related mobility issues since last October. She had difficulty walking and hence had cut down on her travels.
Her eldest son, Charles, Prince of Wales, will become king now.
The tragic news came after the palace announced that doctors had been concerned for her health. Thus, they recommended, that she stays under medical supervision.
