"Kya?Bharat?jaise bade desh ke liye kurbani dene waalon ko yahi milta hai?"
This is what?Ravindra Kaushik wrote in one of his last letters to his family. He was talking about the trauma he faced in the Pakistan jail after he was caught.?
One of India's greatest spies, Kaushik?met a tragic end. His remains lie buried in the New Central Multan Jail.?
Now a Bollywood film based on the life story of Kaushik is in the works, and Salman Khan has confirmed to PTI that he has been roped in to play the role of the man who?was conferred with the title 'The Black Tiger' by the then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Born in Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan in 1952, Kaushik belonged to a Punjabi family. He loved theatre and also did many stage shows. That is what brought him to the attention of the national intelligence agency. According to reports, after he completed his graduation, he was officially inducted into the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW).
As part of his training in Delhi for two years, he learned Urdu and the topography of Pakistan. He also read Islamic scriptures. He reportedly underwent circumcision so he could pass off as a Muslim.?
Soon, he was sent for a mission to Pakistan. Ravindra Kaushik became Nabi Ahmed Shakir. He then completed his LLB from Karachi University. He joined the Pakistan Army as a commissioned officer and was eventually promoted to the rank of a major.
He also got married there to a girl named Amanat, who was the daughter of a tailor in one of the army units, with whom he had a daughter.
As per reports, between 1979 to 1983, he sent valuable inputs to India, following which he was conferred with the title ĄŽthe black tigerĄ¯ by then-PM Indira Gandhi.
In 1983, R&AW sent a low-level operative, Inyat Masih, to get in touch with Kaushik. Inyat was caught and this blew Kaushik's cover too.?
He was tortured by Pakistan Army for two years and was given the death sentence in 1985. His sentence was later commuted to a life term by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.?
He stayed in jail for 16 years. Because of the poor living conditions in jails, he contracted asthma and tuberculosis, which later turned fatal. In 2001, he succumbed to pulmonary tuberculosis and heart disease at the New Central Multan Jail.?
As per Ravindra's family, the Indian government refused to recognise him and made no effort to help him.
The film which is reportedly titled Black Tiger will be co-produced by Salman Khan's sister Alvira Agnihotri and his brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri. Rajkumar Gupta will be directing the massive project.
