Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma claimed that Sukhwinder, not AR Rahman, was the composer of the iconic song Jai Ho. Playing in Danny Boyle's 2008 film Slumdog Millionaire, Jai Ho became an international sensation following its Academy Award win for Best Original Song. Written by Gulzar and performed by Sukhwinder Singh, the song was well-received by all.??
Ram Gopal Varma implied that Sukhwinder, not AR Rahman, was the song's composer in a recent interview with Film Companion. Sukhwinder has, however, denied these allegations, asserting that AR Rahman wrote the song.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, he said? "I have only sung it. Ram Gopal Varma ji koi chhoti hasti toh nahi hain, shayad unhe kuchh galat pata chala hoga.¡±
Sukhwinder described the creation of Jai Ho, stating that Gulzar's lyrics served as inspiration for Rahman while he wrote the song in his Juhu studio. Upon hearing and appreciating the song, Ghai felt it did not fit "Yuvvraaj," so he asked Rahman to write a new song that would better reflect the changing character dynamics in the movie.
¡°He said the character for whom he wanted a song had become naughty in the story, this song wasn¡¯t fitting. He wanted a more masaledaar song. He told Rahman, but he insisted that this was nice. I too said ¡®thode changes kar do¡® (please make some changes), but Subhash ji said poora gaana hi alag chahiye. (I want a whole new song),¡± said Sukhwinder.

He subsequently gave Rahman this version, and Rahman gave it to Danny Boyle, which resulted in its inclusion in "Slumdog Millionaire." Rahman also wrote a second piece for "Yuvvraaj," per Ghai's request.

The singer also said, ¡°Then he left, Rahman left. I was sad. I requested Gulzar sahab to stay back for 10-15 minutes. He asked why, to which I replied he has written it so well, let me try singing. Naachte kudte maine gaa diya. (I just sang it casually.) It was the same ¡°Jai Ho¡± you listen to today. I sent it across to Rahman sahab, who in turn made it listen to Danny Boyle, director of Slumdog Millionaire. Rahman also kept his promise and gave another song to Subhash ji for Yuvvraaj.¡±
