Sushmita Sen's former boyfriend Vikram Bhatt, who she dated when she had just entered the industry after winning the Miss Universe title, has come out in support of her. Reacting to people calling her a gold digger for dating Lalit Modi, Bhatt said,?"Sushmita is a love digger, not a gold digger."
"Sushmita is the last person who checks out bank balances before she decides to fall in love with someone. I was penniless. I was directing Ghulam, but I had no money.?
"I will not forget that Sushmita was the person who first took me to the US, and she paid for my trip. I had no money. When we reached Los Angeles and there was a limousine, and I was surprised. She said that she wanted to make my entry in the US very special," he was quoted as saying by India Today.
Opening up on her affair with Vikram Bhatt, Sushmita Sen had told Simi Grewal on her show,?"The wife and him were not living together, and I cannot go around feeling guilty or make a person feel guilty if he had a bad marriage.?I don¡¯t feel guilty because I have done something very openly with a very open conscience. I know that the man was in a divorce when I met him, and I wasn¡¯t going to wait to tell the world that I loved him just because he hadn¡¯t gone through with his divorce yet."
Vikram Bhatt was married at that time - to his childhood crush Aditi - and his affair with Sushmita Sen had caused a furore in the industry. Their relationship, however, didn't last long and they parted ways.?
"I regret hurting my wife and my child and abandoning them. I regret the pain I caused them. I always believe that when you¡¯re not courageous, you become cunning. I did not have the courage to tell Aditi how I felt. And it was all happening together, it was a big mess.?I regret being weak at that time. Had I not been weak, things would have been different today. But when I look back in hindsight, it¡¯s all about growing up, and everything teaches you something at least," he had told Hindustan Times.
