Remember the monkey story in Sandeep Reddy Vanga's?Animal? Was it about an uncontrollable animal, or did it mirror the protagonist's own struggles? And remember Ved's three-way mirror in?Tamasha? It symbolised his multiple personalities. Movies often communicate beyond their dialogues; the sets, props, and costumes form a visual language that resonates with audiences on a subconscious level. Sometimes you're able to notice them, sometimes they just stay in your subconscious mind. This also reflects how brilliant the art of filmmaking is.?
If you have watched Vijay Sethupathi's much-talked-about film?Maharaja, which also stars Anurag Kashyap, did you notice such examples of symbolism? Someone on X (formerly called Twitter) pointed out how symbolism was used brilliantly in the Tamil action-thriller directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, and people are completely bowled over.
Snake symbolised Nallasiva's personality?
Nallasiva (Singampuli) is a Police informer but he doesn't let anyone know that he is also a criminal - just like the snake who has been hiding at the police station for so long. When?Nallasiva's real personality is revealed, the snake also comes out from hiding. The fact that Maharaja (Vijay Sethupathi) picks it up while everyone else steps out also reflects the storyline on how he was trying to get even with him. Is this also the reason whyNallasiva keeps sniffing in the movie? Is that equivalent to hiss sound of a snake?
The mother-child showpiece
Remember when Maharaja takes it in his hand, it breaks immediately reflecting how his happy family shattered after the accident. The mother's statue breaks and falls down while the child's portion remains in his hands. That's exactly what happened happened in Maharaja's life. The makers wanted us to believe this so that we are completely bowled over after watching the climax - that had a different story altogether. In the end, the child part of the showpiece also falls off from Maharaja's hands - thus reflecting the true story.?
