Examining Rajinikanth’s equation with his former son-in-law Dhanush

Rajinikanth, who turns 74 on December 12, is one of the most popular names in Indian cinema. The actor entered the industry in 1975 and emerged as a cultural icon because of his punch dialogues and stylish reel mannerisms. During his long and illustrious career, he has also often been in the limelight because of his personal life.?

‘Thalaivar’ married Lata Rangachari, a singer, in 1981. They have two daughters Aishwaryaa and Soundarya, both directors in the Tamil industry. Aishwaryaa, best known for directing 3, married actor Dhanush in 2004. This made the talented performer Rajinikanth’s ‘mappillai’. Dhanush was an ardent fan of Rajinikanth’s work right from a young age and virtually grew up idolising him. He once recalled visiting Superstar’s Poes Garden house as a 16 year old.?

His admiration for Rajinikanth helped him strike up a good rapport with the 'Jailer' star. He went on to produce Rajinikanth’s critically acclaimed gangster drama Kaala (2018) under the Wunderbar Films banner. During the film’s audio launch, the veteran actor called Dhanush a “good man”? and pointed out that he has strong family values.?

“Dhanush is a wonderful boy. He respects his parents, considers them God. He takes care of his wife. He is a good father, a good son-in-law, a good man, a good talent,” he had said

A few years later, Aishwaryaa shared a photo of Rajinikanth and Dhanush together. This came shortly after ‘D’ won the National Award for Asuran and Rajini was conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contribution to cinema.?

In 2022, Aishwaryaa and Dhanush decided to part ways.? This setback, however, did not affect Dhanush’s respect for Rajinikanth. He was one of the first stars to praise his look in Jailer. He also watched the mass hero’s recently released film Vettaiyan First Day First Show (FDFS) with fans in a theatre.?

Coming to Soundarya, she too made headlines some time ago because of her personal life. She tied the knot with Ashwin Ramkumar, an industrialist, in 2010. The wedding was a grand affair. Rajinikanth blessed the couple on the special day and posed for photos with them. However, not much is known about his equation with Ashwin as he wasn’t from the industry.?

Soundarya and Ashwin were granted divorce in 2017.?

Coming back to the present, Rajinikanth is going through an exciting phase on the work front. He was last seen in Vettaiyan, which opened to a good response at the box office despite receiving mixed reviews. He is currently working on Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. He also has Jailer 2 in his kitty. Its promo is likely to be released on his birthday.?
