With Phase 4 in the offing, MCU is kind of living up to its promise of introducing some eagerly anticipated superheroes. The latest one to join the bandwagon is none other than New Jersey teen Kamala Khan also known as Ms Marvel.?
The recently released trailer of the series has opened a wide door for conversation as the universe has retained her look from the comics but her superpowers have been changed. The core elements are the same but she now has a new powerset.
Kamala is a self-proclaimed second-generation brown girl from Jersey City, a Captain Marvel fanatic who loves playing video games, hanging out with friends and writing Avengers fan-fic. She is the first Muslim character to star in her own Marvel Comics series. Played by Iman Vellani, Kamala is an inhuman who has the ability to Polymorph or shapeshift - change the size, shape and appearance of her body. Her classic ¡°Embiggen!¡± move typically involves punching someone with a super-sized fist.?
In the past, she has had a couple of heartwarming and entertaining team-ups, including one with Wolverine that became the most adorable odd-couple pairing in comic book history. In her her series, she will be seen tackling cultural and social issues around being a superpowered Muslim American girl.
The recently released trailer has left the fans divided. While some are excited to watch the web series, others are questioning the changes made by maker Bisha K Ali. The initial reactions include her being too brown and anorexic along with the series being too cartoonish and joyful.
Comic purists are disappointed in Kamala¡¯s new gifts. Rather than manipulating her physical structure, the series¡¯ Kamala uses hard light constructions just like Carol Danvers or Monica Rambeau (from WandaVision). They are calling it a significant change and feel it¡¯s derivative.
The Disney + Hotstar series has limited her abilities to her wristbands that she wears with her costume. They somehow appear to act in a way similar to a Green Lantern Power Ring, creating constructs that help Kamala fight crime. Kamala has been an inspiration as she reminded readers that looks aren't everything, and what's inside is more important. With the new change, the larger message of what it means to be comfortable in her own skin is lost.?
One Twitter user who did not like the concept wrote, ¡°Ruined her powers. I get having to modify the origin, doesn't seem that was handled well either, but you can't change her powers to something completely different.¡±
Interestingly, actor Farhan Akhtar has been rumoured to be part of the series, but he could not be spotted in the trailer. Fawad Khan, who had previously confirmed shooting for the series, was also missing. It would be interesting to see what these two actors bring to the table in this much anticipated six-part series. It will stream on Disney + Hotstar from June 8.
