The documentary feature film To Kill A Tiger, directed by Nisha Pahuja, an Indo-Canadian, has made it to the Oscar shortlist for 2024. The 96th Academy Awards are slated to happen in Los Angeles on March 10, 2024. Will it make it to the nominations list? Well that's a question that will be answered when the nominations are officially announced. But before that, let's check out what the documentary is about.
The film by Nisha Pahuja chronicles the terrifying tale of a Jharkhand family and their quest to prosecute those responsible for a sexual attack on a thirteen-year-old girl.
On September 10, 2022, the movie had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. In June 2023, the movie made its North American premiere at the Lighthouse International Film Festival.
In its description of the film, TIFF mentioned, "While aspects of this story might seem culturally specific, there is much in To Kill A Tiger that speaks more broadly to rape culture and the silencing of women. Many people in the village insist that the perpetrators' "naughty" behaviour must have been provoked by Ranjit's daughter, but she needs to be reassured that what happened wasn't her fault. When it comes to rape, shame is wielded like a blunt instrument. But the story of Ranjit and his fearless daughter, enduring so many voices clamouring for them to stand down, is one of remarkable strength and defiance."?
In the meantime, India's official entry in the international feature film category of the 2024 Academy Awards, the Malayalam film "2018: Everyone is a Hero," has dropped out of the running.
In September of this year, "2018," which stars Tovino Thomas in the lead role, was revealed as India's official submission for the 96th Academy Awards. The film tells the tale of the terrible 2018 Kerala floods.??
