After being nominated thrice,?Robert Downey Jr has finally bagged an Academy Award. At Oscars 2024, the man won?best supporting actor for Oppenheimer. Here's his winning speech.
It is?Downey's first Oscar win. He was previously been nominated for Best Actor in 1993 for Chaplin, and for Best Supporting Actor in 2009 for Tropic Thunder.
Robert Downey Jr played the role of Lewis Strauss in Nolan's biopic of the titular physicist (played by Cillian Murphy). In the last few months, he has bagged many trophies at?the Golden Globe, Critics Choice Award,?SAG Award,?and BAFTA for his masterful performance of Oppenheimer's duplicitous former colleague.
In his speech, Downey Jr said, "I¡¯d like to thank my terrible childhood and the Academy ¡ª in that order." Evidently, he started off with a joke and added, "I¡¯d like to thank my veterinarian ¡ª I meant wife, Susan Downey over there. She found me a snarling rescue pet and you loved me back to life. That¡¯s why I¡¯m here."
He then thanked the team of Oppenheimer and included?Nolan, producer Emma Thomas and his co-stars and fellow Oscar nominees Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt.
He added, "Here¡¯s my little secret. I needed this job more than it needed me. Chris knew it. [Producer Emma Thomas] made sure that she surrounded me with one of the great casts and crews of all time ¡ª Emily, Cillian. It was fantastic. And I stand here before you a better man because of it,¡± Downey continued. ¡°What we do is meaningful, and the stuff that we decide to make is important."
Robert Downey Jr concluded his Oscar 2024 speech and said, "My entertainment lawyer Tom Hanson, of 40 years, the half of which he spent trying to get me insured and bailing me out of the hoosegow ¡ª thanks, bro."?
On how he bagged the role, Downey Jr had earlier said, "I was at a place in my life in my career, where I needed someone to have a vision of what was possible for me that I couldn¡¯t see for myself.?I got the call that I should go over to Chris¡¯ house, which is already kind of exciting," he said and added, "I¡¯d been casing the place for weeks!¡± When asked what Nolan did while Downey was alone in his house reading the screenplay, the actor joked the director was spying on him: ¡°You know those paintings that have the eyes in them? I think a saw a [the] lids kind of flicker a bit. Just speculating."
Oppenheimer?was released on July 21.?The biopic, set during World War II, follows Oppenheimer, known as the ¡°Father of the Atomic Bomb,¡± during a period in history when he understood that testing the atomic bomb would ignite the atmosphere and destroy the world, yet he pushed the button anyway.?The film received a lot of appreciation from the audience.?
