While Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Heeramandi is a total fictional story based on a real place, Heeramandi, a red light area in Lahore Pakistan, here is a real story of a Tawaif aka courtesan who became a Pakistani actress, quite successful one as she was the highest paid item girl of her time. However, destiny had its own plan. She was murdered by her own husband.?
Born in the red-light area of Lahore, Nargis Begum aka Niggo was born to a courtesan of Heeramandi who used to organsie mujras to support her family. Niggo followed her mother's footsteps and used to dance at mujras after she grew up. Intrestingly, the Pakistani film industry also known as Lollywood was also in Lahore, and often, filmmakers would take courtesans in their films, as most women were too shy to dance in front of the camera at that time.?
This how Niggo became an actress. Her dancing skills impressed filmmakers and she willingly accepted the offer to fo Pakistani films and thus became and actress. She made her debut in 1964 with a film called Ishrat. One after the other opportunities came her way and soon she became popular. She did about 100 movies and mostly danced in them. Hence, she became the highest paid item girl.?
Nargis Begum fell in love with?producer Khawaja Mazhar during the shoot of?Qasu?in 1971. Despite Niggo's family not agreeing, they both got married. Tawaifs getting married was frowned upon at that time. After her marriage, Niggo also stopped working in movies, and her relationship with Heeramandi also ended, which was the only livelihood of her family. Her mother, hence, tried to bring her back.?
Niggo's mother faked an illness and got her back to Heeramandi, where she brainwashed her and emotionally blackmailed her into staying back. On the other side, Khawaja Mazhar was becoming desperate to get her back. When his efforts went in vain as Niggo kept denying to come back, he shot her dead. In January 1972, he went to her kotha and asked her to come with him. When she refused, he opened fire at her and her family thus killing them all.?Nargis Begum, her uncle, and a musician, all present at the scene, passed away on the spot. Mazhar received a life sentence for their murders.
