Humiliation, legal cases, arrest and more: How Rhea Chakraborty¡¯s life changed after Sushant Singh Rajput¡¯s death
The legal struggles of Rhea Chakraborty are taking a positive turn now. On October 25, 2024, the Supreme Court of India dismissed a petition filed by?the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the State of Maharashtra and the Bureau of Immigration. The plea challenged the Bombay High Court's quashing of Look-out-Circulars (LOCs) previously issued against Rhea and her family in the Sushant Singh Rajput death case.
Rhea was reportedly in a relationship with the Dil Bechara actor at the time of death and this gave the internet some presumed rights over her public humiliation. Sushant was found dead at his Bandra house on June 14, 2020, and despite the cause of his death being ruled out as suicide, Rhea and her brother Shovik were nabbed by authorities in a whole different case because the social media storm was aggressive against them.

An abetment to suicide case right after Sushant Singh Rajput's death
Until a week before Sushant¡¯s death, Rhea was living with the actor at his house and this prompted a case getting filed by SSR¡¯s family.?On July 25, 2020, a case of abetment of suicide, wrongful restraint, wrongful confinement, theft, criminal breach of trust, and cheating was filed against Rhea in Rajput¡¯s hometown Patna.
ED, CBI, and NCB slapped fresh cases against Rhea
In no time, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) initiated an investigation following allegations of money laundering linked to Sushant's death and on August 7, Rhea and her brother were called for questioning. Amid all of this, the Supreme Court took away SSR¡¯s investigation from Mumbai Police and handed it over to the CBI on August 19. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) slipped in following the heat and ran a parallel investigation following allegations of drug trafficking and abuse.
It was on September 8, 2020, that NCB arrested Rhea alleging charges of supplying marijuana to Sushant and she was kept in judicial custody. On October 7, she was granted bail by the Bombay High Court and was released the same day.
The social media butchering and media trial
The internet left no stone unturned to publicly vilify and blame Rhea for all that happened to Sushant. The traditional media jumped on the bandwagon and ran frivolous headlines and news pieces that pushed the character of the actress to public humiliation. While people issued her death threats online, reporters shoved mikes on her chest when she stepped out - visuals of which might scar someone for life.
An October piece in South China Morning Post in October that year read, "India's hyperbolic television channels, which have given more airtime to this case than India's battle against Covid-19 and the recent rapes of lower-caste women, labelled Chakraborty a 'murderer'."
Rhea was just starting to explore her acting career when media trials and desktop commenters ruined her entire life. Having done films like Jalebi and Sonali Cable, her name in Sushant¡¯s case closed all doors for her. With no work for the longest time, Chakraborty made a comeback in showbiz with the reality show MTV Roadies in 2023 where she took up a gang leader¡¯s chair.
Very recently, she started her own podcast named Chapter 2 where celebs like Sushmita Sen, Aamir Khan, Zakir Khan Tanmay Bhat, Farhan Akhtar and Shibani Dandekar showed up. Rhea is slowly putting her life back together but her heart still remains broken - disappointed with a scar that the world has given her.
