The Tamil Nadu government has announced its decision to launch an investigation into police misconduct involving a group known as the 'Manjummel Boys.' This decision stems from an unsettling event that took place in 2006, which recently gained attention due to its depiction in a recently released Malayalam movie. The film, based on true events, portrays a group of young men from Manjummel, Kerala, who travelled to Kodaikanal. The plot thickens when they seek assistance from the local police after one of their friends becomes trapped in the infamous Guna Caves.
Instead of receiving immediate help, the group experiences mistreatment at the hands of some officers from the Tamil Nadu Police, who are shown in the film as initially refusing to aid in the rescue efforts. It was only after some time that an officer agreed to help the group and started the rescue operation.

The trigger for the new investigation was a formal complaint lodged by V. Shiju, a former member of the Railway Conservative Committee from Nilambur. After hearing the grievances of the real-life 'Manjummel Boys', Shiju took their case to the Home Secretary of Tamil Nadu. Subsequently, the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP) ordered an inquiry into the allegations.

In an interview with Mathrubhumi, Shiju disclosed that the actual experiences of the 'Manjummel Boys' were even more harrowing than depicted in the movie. According to him, not only were they subjected to severe mistreatment, but they were also allegedly robbed of their money by the police.
Despite the adversity, Shiju himself played a crucial role in the incident. He risked his life by entering the Guna Caves to rescue his trapped friend. His bravery did not go unnoticed, as he was later awarded the "Jeevan Raksha Padak" by the government in recognition of his courageous act.
The investigation initiated by the Tamil Nadu government marks a critical step towards addressing past injustices and ensuring accountability.
As the probe moves forward, it will seek to shed light on the actions of the police during the 2006 incident and provide justice to those who suffered undue hardship during their time of need.?
