South X'mas eve box office report: Marco, Viduthalai Part 2 soar but Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2 is still 'wildfire'

December is usually a memorable month for movie buffs as several big-ticket films hit the screens during this time. Things aren’t too different this time around as well. The month began with Pushpa 2, which stars Allu Arjun and Rashmika Mandanna. Vidhutahalai Part 2 and the Malayalam thriller Marco arrived in theatres nearly two weeks later and added to the fun. Here is a look at the box office performance of these films

Pushpa 2?

Allu Arjun’s actioner revolves around a daring smuggler who locks horns with powerful foes in his bid to expand his ‘empire’.

?It hit the screens on December 5 and has raked in over Rs 1000 crore in India so far. It is expected to witness good growth today (December 24) as it is Christmas Eve. Moreover, it is also likely to go into overdrive on X-mas day. It faces no competition in the Telugu states as there are no major straight releases in that market. It, however, will face some competition from Varun Dhawan’s Baby John when it opens in theatres tomorrow.?

Marco

Unni Mukundan’s action thriller Marco centres on the events that unfold when the protagonist goes on a path of destruction after something goes wrong in his life. It has become the talk of the town with its raw and violent content.??Marco, which hit the screens on December 20, has collected nearly Rs 18 crore in India in four days. The film has received rave reviews with critics praising the performances.?

The healthy word-of-mouth is likely to help it stay stable today (December 24). The flick will, however, face stiff competition from Mohanlal’s Barroz when it hits the screens on December 25.?

Viduthalai Part 2?

Viduthalai Part 2, a sequel to the Vijay Sethupathi-led Viduthalai, is a crime-thriller that centres on the events that unfold when a constable locks horns with a powerful political leader. The film, opened in theatres on December 20, has collected nearly Rs 22 crore in four days. The film has also impressed critics with most of them praising the performances and the screenplay. The healthy word-mouth helped it hold its own against Mufasa: The Lion King. The Tamil crime thriller is expected to stay stable today (December 24) and tomorrow (December 25) as it faces no major competition in Tamil Nadu, its home market.?

December is set to become more exciting in the days to come as three big films– Barroz, Max, and Baby John– are set to hit the screens on December 25.?
