Renowned actor O Yeong-Su, celebrated for his portrayal in the global hit 'Squid Game', has been found guilty of sexual misconduct in a case dating back to 2017.
The 79-year-old actor was convicted of hugging and kissing a woman against her consent, resulting in an 8-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, as reported by Deadline, based on Korean news sources.
The verdict was delivered by the Seongnam Branch of the Suwon District Court, following charges brought against O in 2022.
The accusations stemmed from an incident where he allegedly hugged and kissed a woman on the cheek.
Even though he contested the accusations, the court pronounced him guilty.
Leaving the courthouse on Friday, O expressed his intention to appeal the ruling. As part of his sentence, he is required to attend a 40-hour sexual offender treatment program.
During the trial, O maintained his innocence, stating that he had merely held the woman's hand to assist her around a lake. "I apologised because (the person) said she wouldn't make a fuss about it, but it doesn't mean that I admit the charges," he asserted.
With a career spanning over five decades, O gained international recognition for his role in Netflix's 'Squid Game', a series that explores a dystopian world where marginalised individuals are coerced into participating in lethal renditions of childhood games.
Despite his legal troubles, O's contributions to the entertainment industry remain a significant part of his legacy. But according to Reuters, the accusations against O led to his removal from an upcoming South Korean film, sparking controversy.
Meanwhile, following the sentencing, Womenlink, a notable feminist organisation, addressed reporters, stating: "We can now affirm that sexual violence within the entertainment industry is not a longstanding tradition but a grievous offense. The accused should cease attempts to diminish the gravity of his actions, offer a sincere apology to the victim, and acknowledge his wrongdoing."
