World Breastfeeding Week - August 1st to August 7th

World Breastfeeding Week is an annual event celebrated globally to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding for the health and well-being of infants and mothers. It takes place from August 1st to August 7th every year.

1858 - East India Company Transferred to British

On August 2nd, 1858 the Parliament passed a bill to take over the administration of India from the East Indian Company by the British Crown. The title of Viceroy was introduced for the supreme representation of the British Government in India.

This bill was passed in 1858, the year following the first war of Independence in India (or what the British referred to as the Indian Rebellion) to calm down the after effects of the uprising.

1776 - Signing of the Declaration of Independence

After much debate, the Second Continental Congress ultimately agreed to the Declaration of Independence, and then signed it on August 2, 1776, in the Pennsylvania State House.

1870 - World's first underground railway opened

The Tower Subway beneath River Thames in London opened its doors to passengers. The subway was closed within a few months because of bankruptcy. The tunnel is now used for utilities.

1914 - Germany invades Luxembourg

As international tensions heightened during the summer of 1914, Germany made plans to besiege France by crossing Luxembourg and Belgium, despite their neutrality. The two countries refused free passage to the German troops and were invaded on August 2 and August 4, respectively.

1990 - Invasion of Kuwait begins

On August 2nd, 1990, at about 2 AM local time, Iraqi forces invade Kuwait, Iraq's tiny, oil-rich neighbor. Kuwait's defense forces were rapidly overwhelmed, and those that were not destroyed retreated to Saudi Arabia.

1934 - Hitler becomes dictator of Germany

On 2 August 1934, Hindenburg died and Hitler replaced him as the head of state and government. Hitler aimed to eliminate Jews from Germany and establish a New Order to counter what he saw as the injustice of the post-World War I international order dominated by Britain and France.

- In 1922, Alexander Graham Bell, generally regarded as the inventor of the telephone, died in Nova Scotia, Canada, at age 75.

- In 1934, German President Paul von Hindenburg died, paving the way for Adolf Hitler’s complete takeover.

- In 1939, Albert Einstein signed a letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt urging the creation of an atomic weapons research program.

- In 1945, President Harry S. Truman, Soviet leader Josef Stalin and Britain’s new prime minister, Clement Attlee, concluded the Potsdam conference.

- In 1974, former White House counsel John W. Dean III was sentenced to one to four years in prison for obstruction of justice in the Watergate cover-up. (Dean ended up serving four months.)

- In 1980, 85 people were killed when a bomb exploded at the train station in Bologna, Italy.

- In 1985, 137 people were killed when Delta Air Lines Flight 191, a Lockheed L-1011 Tristar, crashed while attempting to land at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

- In 2012, Kofi Annan resigned as peace envoy to Syria, blaming the Syrian government’s intransigence, the growing militancy of Syrian rebels and a divided U.N. Security Council that he said failed to forcefully back his effort. Gabby Douglas became the third American in a row to win gymnastics’ biggest prize when she claimed the all-around Olympic title; Michael Phelps added to his medal collection with his first individual gold medal of the London Games in the 200-meter individual medley.

18761 - Famous scientist Prafulla Chandra Rai, considered the 'father of chemistry' was born

Known as “Father of Indian Chemistry”, Prafulla Chandra Ray was a well-known Indian scientist and teacher and one of the first “modern” Indian chemical researchers. He discovered the stable compound Mercurous Nitrite in 1895.
