NASA has accomplished some amazing feats throughout the decades. Since its incorporation, most of the space exploration efforts of the United States have been led by NASA, gradually making the agency the most advanced space agency on Earth.
From 1958 to now, some revolutionary and remarkable space programs carried out by NASA include the Apollo missions for moon-landing, the Skylab space station, and later on the infamous Space Shuttle program. For six decades, NASA has led the peaceful exploration of space, making discoveries about our planet, our solar system, and our universe.
On July 29, 1958, Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act, creating the agency, which opened for business on October 1, 1958.

The National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 Creates NASA
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is a state-owned agency of the United States of America in control of the civil space program along with advanced research in aerospace and aeronautics. It was established by then President Dwight D. Eisenhower with a distinct orientation towards civilian areas rather than the military to encourage the peaceful application of space science. After the successful passage of the National Aeronautics and Space Act in July 29, 1958, the agency came into existence on October 1, 1958, with headquarters in Washington, D.C.
From NACA To NASA
The creation of NASA following the Soviet Union¡¯s 1957 launch of Sputnik? Yes, certainly. But it had happened before. Even though Americans had flown the first airplane in 1903, by the beginning of World War I in 1914, the United States lagged behind Europe in airplane technology. In order to catch up, Congress founded the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics on March 3, 1915, as an independent government agency reporting directly to the President.
Formation and Early Years
For 40 years, the NACA conducted aeronautical research that was ultimately transferred to the nascent aerospace industry, which led the U.S. economy into the late 20th century. NASA opened for business on October 1, 1958, with T. Keith Glennan, president of Case Institute of Technology in Ohio, as its first administrator. NACA director Hugh Dryden served as the first deputy administrator, and NACA veteran Robert Gilruth ultimately headed the Space Task Group and the Mercury program before becoming the director of NASA¡¯s Manned Spacecraft Center (now the Johnson Space Center) in Houston.

Project Mercury - America's First Astronauts
NASA's first manned spaceflight program was Project Mercury. It aimed to put humans into suborbital and orbital flight around Earth. On May 5, 1961, NASA achieved its first manned spaceflight with Alan Shepard becoming the first American in space.
NASA's Project Gemini: Bridge to the Moon
Gemini was an early NASA human spaceflight program. Gemini helped NASA get ready for the Apollo moon landings. Ten crews flew missions on the two-man Gemini spacecraft. The Gemini missions were flown in 1965 and 1966. They flew between the Mercury and Apollo programs.
The Apollo Program: NASA sent astronauts to the moon
The Apollo program was NASA's most iconic and ambitious project. It aimed to land humans on the Moon and bring them back safely to Earth. On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 achieved this historic feat, with astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin becoming the first humans to walk on the lunar surface.
Skylab and Space Shuttle Era?
After the Apollo program, NASA focused on establishing a space station in low Earth orbit. The well-known meatball logo came around about the same time that NASA started, in the late 1950s. Created by James Modarelli, who worked for NASA, the large circular design was almost immediately named the Meatball by staff members.
1975 - NASA¡¯s Worm Logo
In 1975, the ¡°Worm¡± logo made its way into NASA, even if it was quickly replaced by the circular emblem in 1992.
