What is the history of Karwa Chauth?

The Karwa Chauth fast is observed the entire day without food or drink anything by married women for good health, and long and happy life for their husbands. Even unmarried women follow the same ritual in the hopes of finding a good life partner. When talking about its history, according to scriptures, when war was going on between the gods and the demons then lord Bharma suggested the wives of the deities observed the fast to seek blessing from Karwa mata for the victory of their husbands and it is believed that since then the fast of Karwa Chauth has been celebrated.

A long time ago, in the city of Indraprasthapur, there lived a Brahmin named Vedsharma. Vedsharma was happily married to Leelavati and had seven sons and one daughter named Veeravati. As the only sister among her seven brothers, Veeravati received a lot of love and care from her parents and her brothers.

When she grew up, Veeravati was married to a suitable Brahmin boy. One day, while she was with her parents, she observed the Karwa Chauth fast to pray for her husband's long life, along with her sisters-in-law. During the fast, Veeravati became very hungry and weak, eventually fainting and falling to the ground.

Seeing their beloved sister in such a condition, her brothers couldn't bear it. They knew that Veeravati, a devoted wife, would not eat until she saw the moon, even if it meant risking her health. So, they hatched a plan to help her break her fast. One of the brothers climbed a distant banyan tree with a sieve and a lamp. When Veeravati regained consciousness, her brothers told her that the moon had risen and brought her to the rooftop to see it.

Veeravati saw what she thought was the moon behind the sieve on the distant banyan tree, believing it to be the moonrise. To satisfy her hunger, she quickly made offerings to the lamp and broke her fast. However, when she started eating, she experienced various bad omens. In her first bite, she found a hair, in the second bite, she sneezed, and in the third, she received an invitation from her in-laws. Upon arriving at her husband's home for the first time, she discovered her husband's lifeless body.

Devastated and blaming herself for some mistake during her Karwa Chauth fast, Veeravati wept inconsolably. Upon hearing her cries, Goddess Indrani, the wife of God Indra, came to comfort her. Veeravati asked why she had faced such a fate on Karwa Chauth and begged for her husband to be brought back to life.

Goddess Indrani explained that Veeravati had broken her fast without making an offering to the moon, which had led to her husband's untimely death. Indrani advised Veeravati to observe Chauth fasting every month throughout the year, including Karwa Chauth, and assured her that her husband would come back to life.

Veeravati followed this advice, observing monthly fasts with unwavering faith and performing all the necessary rituals. Eventually, due to the accumulated blessings from these fasts, Veeravati's husband was miraculously brought back to life.

In the early morning, hours of Karwa Chauth married women eat Sargi a pre-dawn meal that is considered to be the main part of the festival which is prepared by the mother-in-law.
