The story of Karwa Chauth goes back to Karva Devi, whose husband was attacked by a crocodile, and Savitri, who pleaded with Yama, the god of death, to bring her husband back. Another tale tells of Draupadi, who became worried when Arjun went to the Nilgiris to meditate. She asked Krishna for help to keep him safe.
According to the legend, Krishna told Draupadi to fast for Arjun, just like Parvati did for her husband, Shiva. However, Drik Panchang connects the story of Karwa Chauth to Veeravati, a woman who loved her husband deeply. Veeravati had seven brothers who cared for her very much. One day, while visiting her family, she decided to observe a nirjala vrat (a fast without water) for her husband. Unfortunately, she became weak from hunger and fainted.
Her brothers were worried and begged her to eat, but Veeravati refused, saying she was waiting for the moon to rise. To help her, her brothers climbed a peepal tree and held a light behind a sieve to trick her into thinking the moon had appeared, hoping she would break her fast.
Sadly, the moment she broke her fast without seeing the moon, her husband died. She was heartbroken. However, Indrani, the wife of Indra, came to comfort her and advised her to fast every month for a year so her husband could return to life.
In the end, her patience paid off, and her husband came back. Because of this story, married Hindu women observe a fast on Karwa Chauth, praying to Shiva, Parvati, Ganesha, and Karwa Mata for the long life of their husbands.
Sargi is a vital aspect of the morning rituals on Karwa Chauth. It is prepared by the mother-in-law for her daughter-in-law and consists of various dishes such as parantha, matthi, seviyan, sweets, and fruits, all chosen based on the daughter-in-law's preferences. The food should be sattvik (pure) and is consumed before sunrise. Women wake up early, prepare, and enjoy this meal to provide strength for the day ahead.
