Who Was Lord Mahavir?
Lord Mahavir was born in 599 BCE in Kundagrama (now in Bihar, India). His birth name was Vardhaman Mahavira. Though born into a royal family, he gave up his worldly life at the age of 30 to seek spiritual awakening.
After 12 years of deep meditation and ascetic life, he attained Kevala Jnana, or supreme knowledge. Lord Mahavir then spent his life spreading the principles of Jainism: non-violence (Ahimsa), truth (Satya), non-stealing (Asteya), celibacy (Brahmacharya), and non-possessiveness (Aparigraha).
His teachings are recorded in Jain scriptures known as the Jain Agamas.
