Mother’s Day History

Mother's Day celebrates the role of mothers in society. It is observed in various countries on different dates, but most commonly falls on the second Sunday of May. The history of Mother's Day dates back to ancient times when the Greeks and Romans held festivals in honour of mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele.

However, the modern version of Mother's Day began in the United States in the early 20th century. It was initiated by Anna Jarvis, who wanted to honour her mother 'Ann Reeves Jarvis' and all mothers for their hard work and sacrifice made for their children. She started a campaign to establish a national holiday in memory of her mother, who had passed away in 1905.

In 1914, the 28th President of the United States of America, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. The day became an official holiday in the United States and quickly gained popularity around the world including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Singapore and many more countries worldwide with varying traditions and customs.
