Falgun Purnima 2024 Date: Full moon days in the Hindu calendar are special. In North India, they call it Purnima, in South India, it's Pournami, and in Gujarat, it's Poonam. These days are important because they often coincide with festivals or Jayanti days. Many families fast on Purnima days. It's also a good time for Satya Narayana Puja. The last full moon of the year, Phalguna Purnima, is extra special. Holi, a big Hindu festival, happens then. It's also Lakshmi Jayanti, celebrating the goddess of wealth.
Phalguna Purnima is also called Vasanta Purnima because it's during the Vasanta Ritu, one of the six seasons in Vedic astrology. Hindu festivals aren't really tied to seasons, but they're given names based on when they happen.
In South India, they call Phalguna Purnima Kama Dahanam. It's similar to Holi but with a different legend. Holi is mostly a North Indian thing, but it's celebrated in the south too. In West Bengal and Orissa, they celebrate Dol Purnima during Phalguna Purnima. It's all about Lord Krishna, with processions and playing Holi. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's birthday is also on Phalguna Purnima, which makes it important for Gaudiya Vaishnavas.
Phalgun Purnima happens at the end of the month of Phalguna, which is the last month of the year in the Hindu calendar. It's like the closing chapter of the year and hints at the start of a new one.
According to the Vedic calendar, the full moon day in the Krishna Paksha of the Phalgun month will start at 9:54 am on March 24 and end at 12:29 pm on March 25. Devotees can fast on March 24 and do donations and bathing on March 25.
Also, on March 25, there will be a lunar eclipse, which coincides with Phalgun Purnima. The eclipse will start at 10:24 am and end at 3:01 pm. However, this eclipse won't be visible in India, so there's no need to follow special rituals. Devotees can bathe and donate in the morning of March 25.
Thousands of years ago, during Satya Yuga, there was a demon king named Hiranya Kashyap. He caused a lot of trouble for everyone on Earth. He got a boon from Lord Brahma, making him almost invincible. But he got arrogant and demanded everyone worship him instead of Lord Shri Hari Vishnu. Those who refused were threatened with death.
The word "Purnima" means "Full Moon" in Sanskrit. So, every month's last day in the Hindu Calendar is called Purnima. In the Hindu calendar, the month of Phalguna is the last month of the year. So, Phalguna Purnima is really important because it's the last day of the year. Holika Dahan, a big ritual, happens on this day. It marks the start of spring, and people believe the moon's energy affects Earth strongly.
This day is the last full moon of the year. People believe that if they fast and worship the moon and Lord Shri Hari Vishnu sincerely on this day, they'll be free from past and present sins. People all over the country worship Lord Shri Hari Vishnu on this day to gain salvation. Salvation is seen as the ultimate goal of human life on Earth in Hinduism.
Phalgun Purnima is also Laxmi Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Goddess Laxmi, who represents wealth and abundance. Because so many important occasions fall on this day, it's really special in Hinduism.
On Falgun Purnima, people worship Lord Narasimha, who is the fourth form of Lord Vishnu. They also pray to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi for good health, wealth, and prosperity. To get their blessings, it's important to perform their puja on Falgun Purnima.
