You're not alone in wondering what "rizz" means, especially if you're a generation or so older than Gen Z. But don't feel too left out: it's possible that you have rizz without even knowing what it is. It can also be a verb, as with almost anything these days.?
"Rizz is a colloquial word, defined as style, charm, or attractiveness; the ability to attract a romantic or sexual partner," according to Oxford University Press.?
According to OUP, the word's origin is derived from the middle of "charisma," much like how "fridge" is derived from refrigerator. (However, this is debatable ¨C see below.)?
People associated with the term include actor Tom Holland and sports reporter Shams Charania.?
Rizz went viral on TikTok and other platforms after Twitch influencer Kai Cenat started using the term while livestreaming himself playing video games, interacting with celebrities, pranking his friends, and just chilling out.?
Oxford language specialists chose rizz from a pool of eight terms, weighing their cultural and linguistic weight with over 32,000 votes cast on social media and the Oxford Languages website.?
"Rizz is a term that has boomed on social media," said Oxford Languages President Casper Grathwohl in a news release, "and speaks to how language that enjoys intense popularity and currency within particular social communities ¡ª and even in some cases loses their popularity and becomes pass¨¦ ¡ª can bleed into the mainstream."
