Delhi and the other parts of the National Capital Region woke up to yet another morning of thick smog, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) standing at 432 on Thursday morning. It was the 16th day of this season when the air quality remained in the ' very poor¡¯ category. Amid such conditions, residents complain of breathing issues, skin allergies, and eye irritations.?
The impact of air pollution on eye health is often overlooked, though it significantly contributes to ocular discomfort and disease. The harmful effects of air pollution encompass the overall body parts ranging from lungs to eyes, skin, and hair.
Pollutants like smoke, dust, and chemicals in the air are easily absorbed by the delicate surface of the eyes, leading to symptoms like irritation, tearing, and blurred vision. Dr. KP Reddy, Founder and Chief Mentor, of Maxivision Super Speciality Eye Hospitals explains, ¡°Long-term exposure to particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) can exacerbate conditions such as dry eye disease, where the eyes fail to produce enough tears, resulting in chronic dryness and sensitivity.¡±
Additionally, studies show that individuals in cities with high pollution levels report a higher frequency of eye allergies and infections, as pollutants weaken the natural defence mechanisms of the eyes.?
?¡°For individuals in polluted areas, protective measures like avoiding peak pollution hours, using protective eyewear, and applying eye drops to keep eyes moist are essential steps to reduce discomfort and protect long-term eye health,¡± he adds.?
With the harmful effects of toxic air on eye health, taking care of your eyes is extremely crucial. ¡°Many people are noticing the impact of air pollution on their eyes¡ªproblems like eye irritation, dryness, and even blurred visions,¡± warns Dr. Aditi Sharma, Consultant Ophthalmologist at Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital.
Wear protective eyewear: Use wrap-around sunglasses or protective glasses when outdoors to shield your eyes from dust and pollutants.
Limit Outdoor Exposure: Reduce the time spent outdoors, especially during high-pollution times. Use air quality apps to monitor the best times to go out.
Keep Your Hands Clean: Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes, as hands can carry pollutants. Regularly wash hands to minimise contamination.
Wash Your Face Regularly: Washing your face, especially around the eyes, helps remove any pollutants that might have settled on your skin.
Follow the 20-20-20 Rule: Give your eyes a break from screens every 20 minutes by looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds, which helps prevent strain.
Eat eye-friendly foods: Include foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E, like carrots, spinach, and almonds, which are beneficial for eye health and may help fight pollution-related damage.
Consult an Eye Specialist: If you experience persistent redness, irritation, or dryness, see an eye specialist for advice tailored to your eye health needs.
