A new study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that though heart attacks are on the decline in the elderly age group, they are on the rise among the under-50 age group! The researchers found that there was a steep 44% increase in the number of heart attacks among people in the 25 to 44 age group in the US.
The researchers used data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample, which includes information about over 8 million hospital stays. They believe that obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure are the top causes of heart attacks among this age group, whereas rare conditions like congenital heart defects, injured arteries or trauma are some of the less prominent causes.
The Indian Heart Association reports that 50% of all heart attacks in Indian men occur in the under-50 age group and 25% of all heart attacks in Indian men occur in the under-40 age group. Women are even more at risk, because heart disease is typically more prevalent in women than in men. A study conducted in the 12 biggest Indian metro cities found that women are at a much higher risk of heart disease now than they were 12 years ago. In fact, heart disease is so rampant in India that it accounts for approximately 60% of the world¡¯s heart disease burden, despite the fact that we have less than 20% of the world¡¯s population.
