"I have no explanation for it, but I do firmly believe that modest drinking improves longevity," said head of the research Dr. Claudia Kawa, M.D, a neurologist at the University of California and one of the researchers in the study, in her speech to the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Surprisingly, people who were overweight but not obese in the 70s ended up living a longer life compared to people with a normal weight or were underweight. "It's not bad to be skinny when you're young, but it's very bad to be skinny when you're old," added Kawa.

This isn't the first study that links alcohol with long life either. A 2015 study of people with mild Alzheimer's had previously found that moderate drinkers were less likely to die in comparison.
