A recent study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine highlights that the imbalance between physical activity and sitting time is directly linked to a higher risk for all-cause mortality. Additionally, for the past few years, there has been an increasing amount of research suggesting the older we grow, the less time we spend on physical activities. This has an adverse impact on our health. According to these studies, we spend a huge amount of time in an environment that not only limits our physical activity but also promotes prolonged sitting, further worsening our lifestyle.?
A sedentary lifestyle impacts our physical and mental health in several ways, like:
1. If you do not burn enough calories you will likely gain weight, increasing your chance of obesity.
2. A sedentary and inactive lifestyle also increases the chances of anxiety and depression.
3. A prolonged sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of mortality from diabetes, cancer and a slew of cardiovascular diseases.

1. Get up and move around your desk whenever you take a short break rather than using your phone or scrolling social media.
2. Conduct standing meetings and encourage your colleagues to do so as well. We all already spend so much time sitting while working so why not have team discussions or meetings and improve our blood circulation?
3. Walk to your coworker's desk instead of sending them a quick mail or message. Whether you want to discuss something work-related drop by their work desk instead of sending a message.
4. Skip the elevator and take the stairs. This will not only save electricity but will actually force you to increase your physical activity in a more organic manner than going to the gym.
5. Reduce your leisure sitting time when you go back home. No matter how tired you are try to engage in activities that will get you moving like going for an evening walk or playing a game of badminton with your neighbour rather than watching movies or TV.
