Recently, kidney diseases have been increasingly associated with unhealthy lifestyles. A sedentary lifestyle that leads to obesity and hypertension increases the risk of chronic kidney disease. Ahead of World Kidney Day, let's understand how poor lifestyle choices are leading to a rise in kidney stone cases.
Poor lifestyle choices, including obesity, dehydration, excessive sodium or processed food intake, and lack of physical activity, are linked to the rise in kidney stone cases. These habits can lead to a buildup of stone-forming minerals in the kidneys.
Several lifestyle factors are highly implicated in the onset of kidney illnesses, out of which diet is probably the most important; that is, high consumption of processed foods, salt, and unhealthy fats. ¡°These sod diet issues can be responsible for a situation of high blood pressure and obesity, both of which are leading causes of kidney disease,¡± says Dr. Bhanu Mishra, Consultant Nephrologist-BLK Max Super Speciality Hospital.
¡°Excess salt leads to stress upon the kidneys, while obesity lowers renal function in the long run due to added metabolic work imposed on an organ,¡± he adds.
According to Dr. Mishra, ¡°Excessive drinking and smoking damage blood vessels over the long haul, causing the failure of the kidneys. But inactivity plays a crucial role too. Failure to exercise offers a scenario of where one will add weight, develop hypertension, or develop diabetes.¡±
These are all serious conditions that increase the chances for kidney diseases.
On the other hand, there is dehydration, which is often neglected in everyday life, can trigger kidney stones, and stimulate the progressive deterioration of the kidney functions. ¡°Additional causes include poor sleep patterns, stress, and lack of diabetic management,¡± says Dr. Punit Gupta, Senior Consultant-Nephrologist, Sharda Hospital.
¡°Diabetes can lead to diabetic nephropathy, which can become very damaging to the kidneys, and an excessive intake of pain-relieving drugs sold over the counter in pharmacies, without asking for medical advice, can also harm one or both kidneys.¡±
Last but not least is one common cause, dehydration. Most people are just not drinking enough water, which diminishes renal function by making it difficult for their body to do the filtering of waste.
