There's a crazy line-up of horror movies staring us in face this year. The trailer-teasers have made sure we make a note of that. While some of the movies won't see the light of day until much later, they're still being raved about, and, so, deserve a spot on this list. Be warned: some of the subject matter is not for the faint of heart. So, dim those lights, snuggle up real tight in bed and hit play.

The Blackwood Academy is seemingly a home (no better than a prison) for the runt of the lot. Before long, the house has six to seven girls new members who realise too late they've walked in straight into hell. Uma Thurman's character looks every bit the convincing, stiff upper-lipped warden who snatches mobiles phones, frowns when the girls go exploring abandoned rooms, and does little to relieve their anxiety after they spot an unknown figure wandering the hallways with them.

Quite possibly the third Slender Man movie, this one looks promisingly dark and rotten. Although five years too late, the legend of the Slender Man has not been given a facelift such as this. The imagery is pretty intense too: open forests, abandoned graveyards, squiggly maggots, you name it. The story more or less seems the same, kids go missing, then the cop cars turn up, followed by missing kids making an appearance. If not for anything else, watch this movie for its atmosphere.

The movie follows a group of 20-somethings as they head out to a remote location in search for the protagonist's missing sister who is allegedly in between worlds thanks to hideous monsters. It might be hard to stifle a yawn as the trailer kicks off, but a few scenes here and there can throw you off. One can deduce the movie won't be a complete bust.

As the title suggests, a family's diseased fate comes with the inheritance. This family's no different when it comes to those with deep, dark secrets. After the matriarch Ellen's death, the Graham family learn about their balls-up ancestry and the try to come to terms with it, even trying to outrun the dangerous fate that awaits them.

When you see a bunch of kids messing with a haunted house, you'd think their next trick is pulling out an Ouija board and using that to converse with spirits from the other realm. But, no. Not here. Here one kid ends up inventing a device that basically makes the house (and the people in it) more susceptible to paranormal attacks. Imagine using science to prove the existence of the paranormal. What a mindbender that is.

This movie comes with its own warning: be in bed by midnight's bell and never let a stranger through your door. The warning does little to prepare twins Rachel and Edwards who find themselves locked inside the house and haunted by the curse on their family. Yet another rule for the twins is they shouldn't never be without each other, but you have little in the matter when evil itself is trying to tear you apart.

A Weinstein Company offering, this one unfortunately is struggling to find a release date. Initially scheduled for a 2017 release, it eventually got bumped off the list and is now eyeing a release sometime this year. The story follows a group of teenagers who discover a vintage Polaroid camera. Little do they know, it comes with a curse, and whoever uses it, meets a gruesome end. Not sure if this movie's something to write home about, but the effects and atmosphere can change the game.
