For 42% of individuals in the Gen Z dating demographic, the speed of receiving a reply holds significant weight when it comes to discerning the level of interest in their dating match. Amongst this group, 28% of females emphasised the importance of a swift response, specifically within a remarkably short window of under two minutes. Such a rapid reply is seen as a clear indication that the match is not only interested but also enthusiastic about sustaining the conversation.
On the contrary, the remaining 20% of respondents elaborated on a different perspective, suggesting that when a man takes more than three days to respond to a message, it may imply that he is simultaneously engaging with multiple individuals in his dating pool. This consistent online availability is interpreted as a positive signal of genuine attraction. Among female daters aged 20 to 32, a noteworthy 26% unveiled a subtle strategy they often employ to express their interest in a match rather than explicitly stating it. They shared that when a woman genuinely appreciates her partner's humour and goes beyond a simple "LOL" to describe why she finds a joke amusing, it can be considered a subtle hint of her interest. Additionally, these hints manifest in various forms, such as subtle compliments, often focused on a man's personality but occasionally extending to his appearance. These individuals might adjust their schedules to align with their matches, engage in conversations about their family, exhibit rapid text responses, and even affectionately refer to their match with a nickname, among other nuanced actions. These hints are to show that the woman is interested and that the man should take things forward after catching them.
Daters belonging to the Millennial and Gen Z generations residing in Tier 1 and 2 cities have shared their perspectives on each other's dating language. A significant 49% of Millennial daters expressed their challenges in comprehending the emerging terminology coined by the Gen Z cohort. They found words like "delulu," "solulu," "rizz," and "cap," along with abbreviations like FR, HMU, IYKYK, and the like, not only confusing but also perceived them as somewhat immature and lacking in effort. Millennial men dating Gen Z women particularly highlighted their struggle to grasp these ever-evolving terms, which seem to emerge incessantly.
On the other hand, 51% of Gen Z daters perceived Millennials as being excessively rigid and overly concerned with grammatical correctness, often prioritising grammar over the establishment of meaningful connections. A notable 31% of Gen Z daters residing in metropolitan areas have shed light on a relatively recent addition to the Gen Z dating lexicon¡ªa phenomenon known as "submarining." This term is employed to describe the situation when a dating match unexpectedly ghosts (disappears without explanation) and then resurfaces months later, much like a submarine resurfacing after being submerged. These young daters indicated that although the term has gained prominence in recent months, the concept itself has existed in the dating world for a significant period, illustrating that such patterns of behaviour are not entirely new but have endured throughout the ages.
