Finding one's way through the modern dating scene appears to be growing more intricate, with each passing day introducing new complexities and nuances. The latest addition to this labyrinth is the 'penny method.'
Lifestyle influencer Erika Tham shared her explanation of the Penny method in a video that has since racked up thousands of views across the internet.
Tham explains this troubling trend, detailing a calculated decrease in the level of effort put into a relationship. It shifts from the initial grand gestures to a mere offering of breadcrumbs, causing concern about the depth of commitment.
During a discussion about ¡°love bombing¡± with her male friend, he introduced the concept of the penny method to Tham. Love bombing, unfamiliar to some, is a damaging dating pattern characterised by overwhelming affection at the start of a relationship, often used manipulatively.
So, with the penny method, at first, a person showers their partner with a lot of love and attention, like giving them a lot of money. But later, they do not keep up that same level of effort. They purposely reduce it just a bit, like omitting a few dollars off a deposit.
The person getting this treatment might notice a decrease in effort, feeling something's not right, but they might worry about speaking up and being seen as too sensitive. Then, the person who started this cycle begins to put in a bit more effort again, albeit not as much as before.?
It is a tricky cycle because the person receiving this might feel like things are getting better, even though there's actually less effort being put in. It's a bit like thinking they're gaining something when they're actually losing.
This cycle of manipulation continues, similar to receiving smaller and smaller amounts of money, until the person receiving it becomes okay with getting very little, just like being satisfied with just a tiny nickel.
Tham echoed the sentiments of the women in the comments and added, ¡°The idea that men might actually think like this makes me so afraid.¡±
