King Charles III of Britain has been diagnosed with cancer and will temporarily step back from public engagements while undergoing treatment, Buckingham Palace announced on Monday.
The 75-year-old monarch previously spent three nights hospitalized last month for a procedure related to an enlarged prostate. During that time, however, doctors identified "a separate issue of concern," which subsequent tests confirmed as cancer.
"His Majesty has today commenced a regular treatment schedule," the Palace statement said. "While doctors have advised him to postpone public-facing duties during this time, he will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual."
The statement emphasized the King's gratitude for his medical team's "swift intervention" and expressed his "wholly positive" outlook on the treatment. He hopes to return to full public duty soon.
King Charles chose to share his diagnosis publicly to address potential speculation and "assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer."
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak offered his well wishes on social media, stating, "Wishing His Majesty a full and speedy recovery. I have no doubt he'll be back to full strength in no time and I know the whole country will be wishing him well."
Not just Sunak, even?UK's opposition Labour Party leader Keir Starmer wished the King well ¡°On behalf of the Labour Party, I wish His Majesty all the very best for his recovery. We look forward to seeing him back to swift full health.¡±
